The History

Originally commissioned by an American for a unique retreat on his private beach situated north of Napier, the Andy Coltart designed Tent house has been the subject of fascination.

The canvas roof, huge supporting jarra beams, the two containers which house both the kitchen and bathrooms, along with an enormous central fireplace make the blackhouse a truly unique design.

In 2011 the blackhouse was dismantled, reconfigured and transported by trucks to Gisborne’s Wainui Beach. The tent has been replaced with a corrugated iron roof and walls, and now rests comfortably overlooking beautiful Wainui Beach.

Luxury holiday homes do not get much better than this, with a combination of stunning 360 degree views and the incredibly relaxing atmosphere and personal touches the blackhouse provides.

  • Our group of six have truly enjoyed the blackhouse. The house is idyllically situated providing spectacular views from every room. The lodge warm and relaxing and the welcoming hospitality generous. The attention to detail was outstanding ! What wonderful memories we will have of Gisborne.
